Our independence rules

Last updated 25 September 2026

No one can pay to change a PlasticFreeHome score, ranking, test result or recommendation. These nine rules explain how we make that true, and how we make money without breaking it.

The rules

  1. No payment for coverage. We never accept money, gifts or free products in exchange for scores, rankings, awards, reviews or coverage.
  2. Scores first, links second. Researchers set Swap Priority and the Evidence Dials before any shop link is added. The people who score products cannot see commission rates.
  3. Labelled links that do not steer. Affiliate links are labelled. We link to the best option whether or not it pays us, and we often recommend things that earn us nothing.
  4. Flat, published certification fees. PFH Checked fees are published, paid up front and identical for a pass or a fail. No brand can pay more to pass.
  5. We buy what we test. Published results use units we bought at retail. Free samples are only ever used for pre-screening.
  6. No ads, no sponsored content. We do not sell display advertising, advertorials or sponsored posts on this site or in our newsletter.
  7. Right of reply and public corrections. Every named brand sees findings before we publish. Mistakes are fixed and logged on our corrections page.
  8. Declared interests. Staff and contributors declare conflicts of interest. No one on the research team may hold shares in, or take payment from, a brand we cover.
  9. Revenue in the open. Each year we publish how much we earned from each source.
