Cut the plastic that actually matters.
Not every swap is equal. We rank them by how much plastic touches your food, drink and skin, and we test the products that claim to be plastic-free.
- Independent. No brand can pay for a score or ranking.
- Lab-tested. Plastic-free claims checked by accredited labs.
- Open methods. Every score shows its working.
- Right of reply. Brands respond before we publish.
Where to start
The four swaps with the biggest payoff for most homes, ranked by our Swap Priority score.
Bottled water → tap water in a steel bottle
Bottled water carries hundreds of thousands of plastic particles per litre. UK tap water is cheap and safe.
Swap first · about 3.0 kg of plastic a year
Reheating in plastic tubs → glass containers
Heating food in plastic is the single clearest route for plastic particles into what you eat. Glass fixes it.
Swap first · about 600 g of plastic a year
Plastic and "bamboo" kids' tableware → stainless steel
"Bamboo" kids' tableware is usually melamine plastic. Steel is unbreakable and safe with hot food.
High priority · about 200 g of plastic a year
Polypropylene baby bottles → glass or steel
Preparing formula with hot water in plastic bottles releases particles. Glass bottles avoid it.
High priority · about 300 g of plastic a year

Not perfect. Just the swaps that count.
Reheating food in a plastic tub and carrying shopping in a plastic bag are very different things. Most advice treats them the same. We don't.
Every swap gets a score from a published formula, and every claim gets an honest grade for how strong the evidence is. When it's weak, we say so.
How we score swaps
“Plastic-free”, checked in a lab
PFH Checked means an accredited lab has tested every part that touches your food, drink or skin, on products we bought ourselves. It's re-checked every year.

Fund the testing. Get the full results.
PFH Plus members pay for the lab work. In return: full reports and raw data, unlimited swap plans, a vote on what we test next, and direct questions to our testers.
